Tennessee Wedding and Events Specialist Association – 2012 Meeting at Cheekwood

I had so much fun this past March being a guest at the Tennessee Wedding and Events Specialist Association meeting, that was held at the beautiful Cheekwood Museum of Art! Even more fun was documenting the pretty details and food provided specifically for the meeting! Cheekwood has for years been one of my favorite places to photograph a wedding. The photographic options are unlimited and the event planning team (comprised of Stephanie Shultz and Jenny Fkye) is fabulous! And before I forget the chef at Cheekwood is a true artist and his food is simply scrumptious! Below is a list of the contributing wedding professionals to this event.

Ode, Floral Artistry

A couple of months ago I had the opportunity of meeting Rickey Minder of Ode, Floral Artistry. New to town, Rickey has hit the ground running with Ode, Floral Artistry. Rickey’s genuine personality is as lovely as her flowers…and I mean every bit of this! It didn’t take much time at all talking with Rickey before I could tell how much of herself she invests in the people she works with and her romantic, wildflower artistry. No matter how much any business may change, as long as it involves people the relationships we nurture with our clients and other professionals will always remain vital to our sustainability. It takes a team of solid, talented professionals to make the wedding day a success. I have complete faith that Rickey and her beloved creations are going to thrive in Nashville. I look forward to getting to know Rickey better and to continue photographing her beautiful work! I am confident that any bride placed in her hands will be in great hands. How did you get into floral design?

When I was 10 my mom bought the flower store in our small town in Idaho, so I could be seen everyday after school cleaning flowers or helping customers. I really started to blossom into the designer I am now when I worked for a beautiful shop called Wildflowers of Oregon. We purchased a lot of our flowers from an organic local grower, and it inspired my love for lush, natural, organic pieces. When I was 19 I started coordinating all their weddings and events for 5 years, since then I’ve designed for other amazing florists, now here I am!

Explain your process of working with a bride.

The nuts and bolts are there, but it’s honestly an entirely different process from couple to couple, given their character, budget, etc… I like to know as much about a bride & groom going into a consultation as possible, so much of planning isn’t just about season & color anymore. I’m committed to working with a bride no matter her budget, so if that means we have to work hard to focus a small budget to fit a dream, I’m up for the challenge! Some bride’s take a hundred emails, phone calls, and changes, some take 2.

What are your favorite flowers?

Is this a fair question? It changes from moment to moment, I can be heard screaming from my studio, THESE are my favorite, every time a flower comes in, but a classic for me is the ranunculus, I think they are impossibly perfect!

What makes you different from other florists?

I like to work with brides who’s vision I know I can master because it fits my design style. I will recommend another florist before taking on something I know I can’t do joyfully. I like to be excited about my work, it makes my work better, then I know each product I put out is nothing short of my expectations or the bride’s. Some probably think I’m crazy to turn away work, but I think we are all here for the bride & groom, and it’s better for the community of wedding vendors to make each one happy.

What’s the one thing you love to hear in consultation with a bride?

”I trust you!” I strive to work with brides who I mesh with so well, I know I can read her mind. I think it’s vital that I see a brides vision the way she does.

iPhone or Blackberry? Neither, I think I’m one of the few of my generation that hates the overload of technology, I traded my Iphone in for a classic, wanna get ahold of me, you have to talk to me:)

Tea or Coffee?

Both! Chai Tea with a shot of espresso!

Favorite song right now?

Just one song, how about an album! I’m a little addicted to my hubbies new album, Better on the Other Side, but I’m also in love with Jessie Baylin’s new album, Little Spark.

Stefanie and Josh | Loveless Barn Winter Wedding

What better way to start the new year than tying the knot?! Stefanie & Josh had a beautiful, winter wedding (sans snow) this past January at the Loveless Barn. The Loveless Barn is truly the perfect space for the couple who is attracted to rustic and relaxed elegance with a slightly modern twist. The feel is so open and calming. The photo opportunities on the property are fun and unique too! Furthermore, it’s always such a treat to work with wedding professionals who excel at their craft and are nice like the staff at the Loveless Barn, The Enchanted Florist and The Bake Shoppe. And although Stefanie didn’t get her wish of snow on her wedding day, the overcast light had a beautiful, wintry look, which was so perfect for beautiful outside photos. Though a little chilly, it wasn’t bad for January and Stefanie was a complete trooper. Photographing Stefanie, Josh and their families was a wonderful experience and a bit of an emotional one. Emotional in the most positive way too! Stefanie’s dance with her father and Josh’s dance with his mother were very moving for all involved. These moments captured are some of my favorite in all of the years I have been photographing weddings. I must admit my eyes even got a little watery and I was glad to be able to hide behind my camera. Nashville Wedding Planners Group Meeting

The Nashville Wedding Planners Group was created by Jennifer Hamilton of Mr. & Mrs. Weddings and Events and Tiffani Helms of Creative Designs & Events as a means to build a sense of community among wedding planners in the Nashville & Franklin area. Every month the group meets to discuss various topics regarding the world of wedding planning and designing, as well as works on building relationships with one another. Each month the group invites other wedding professionals share about their businesses and offerings. This past January the group met at the beautiful Ruby Nashville and I was one of the invited wedding professionals. While I was initially a little nervous about speaking in front of the group (I am not one who enjoys public speaking), I was immediately put at ease by this lovely group of professionals. Since I spend so much time in front of my computer, when I’m not photographing, it is always a breath of fresh air to get out and meet other nice professionals who love what they do and are dedicated to excellence and client satisfaction. Amanda and Mike | Nashville, TN Wedding

Amanda and Mike were married on the most perfect fall day this past November! Their wedding ceremony took place at the historic Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Nashville, with a reception following at The Hermitage Hotel. A month prior to the wedding I did Amanda & Mike’s engagement session in downtown Nashville. We had such a great time creating beautiful images that day! I knew then the wedding day was going to be smooth and pleasurable to document. It really is hard to go wrong when photographing beautiful people, in beautiful places on a flawless day! Heather and Ken | Tennessee Fall Engagement Session

I do believe it’s true that birds of a feather flock together. More and more, I am getting the opportunity to work with couples who love their animals as much as I love mine. Although I have cats, I consider myself to be a big animal lover and have a genuine appreciation for dogs. When Heather, Ken and I were planning their engagement session they expressed interest in incorporating their two dogs(Shelby and Linus) into the shoot. I was certainly up for the challenge and immediately said “let’s do it.” The day we were scheduled to shoot ending up being really cold and rainy. Knowing that weather changes dramatically in Tennessee, from one day to the next, we re-scheduled our shoot for a couple days later. This was undoubtedly a wise choice. We had great weather and the fall colors ending up popping even more than they had a couple of days prior. I must admit Tennessee is so pretty in the fall…if only the colors would last a tad bit longer! Here are a few photos from Heather and Ken’s colorful engagement session. Davilyn and Michael | Nashville, TN Wedding

A big congratulations goes out to Davilyn and Michael, as they tied the this past October! Their beautiful, outdoor wedding and reception took place at their home in East Nashville. While October can be a little unpredictable when it comes to weather, they completely lucked out with perfect weather…not too hot and not too cold! Davilyn has a great eye for all things pretty, so I was not surprised that the wedding details were a little bit of eye candy! One of the many things I loved about Davilyn and Mike’s wedding was having the opportunity to photograph them outside The Family Wash (one of their favorite places to frequent), as well as downtown. Sara and Matthew | Nashville, TN Wedding

September is a wonderful time to get married in Tennessee…and this September did not disappoint! Sara and Matthew had the most ideal weather for their September wedding. They had a beautiful and intimate ceremony in the Skinner Chapel, at Scarritt Bennett, with a reception following at the Cool Springs Marriott. As we all know marriage is not only the uniting of two people but also of families. To say that Sara and Matthew’s families were excited about their union is a huge understatement to say the least. I must admit that all the tears of joy made me feel a little warm all over and I was a bit thankful to have a camera to hide behind. Congratulations Sara and Matthew! May your marriage be long, happy and as beautiful as you both are!

Amanda and Mike | Classic Downtown Engagement Session

The days and months seem to be passing so quickly this year! It seems like it was only a couple of months ago when I first met with Amanda & Mike to talk about photographing their wedding….and now their wedding is in two days. Where does the time go?! I am so excited to share the photos from their engagement session we did a couple of weeks ago. When I asked Amanda and Mike what direction they wanted to take with their photos they told me they wanted to go for a day out in the big city type of feel. I of course loved this idea and was completely on board. We had so much fun taking our time and hitting a few sweet spots. Amanda and Mike are such a wonderful couple! Their photos and relationship dynamic show that sophisticated can still be really warm and intimate…at least that’s what I think. I look forward to the wonderful photo opportunities that await on their wedding day and look forward to sharing the little jewels from the day!

Morgan and Carey | Franklin, TN Wedding

One of the many reasons I enjoy being a wedding photographer is because of the lovely variety of wedding styles I encounter. Every wedding is unique and different. More and more, I find myself photographing in locations other than churches and hotels. While it’s always nice to shoot in a space that I’m familiar with, I really love shooting in a location for the first time. These firsts are always fun and feed my creative soul! Morgan and Carey were married this past September at Morgan’s parent’s home. They had an intimate ceremony, with family only, and then a reception followed where extended family and friends were invited to attend. I cannot express enough how lovely their wedding was! Morgan has a keen eye for all things pretty and vintage…she even wore a vintage wedding dress. Together Morgan and Carey have such a happy sense of calm about them that working with them was so effortless and pleasant. Finally, one things that I adored about their wedding was having the opportunity to photograph Morgan and Carey in the art gallery that is located in the basement of Morgan’s parent’s home. What a beautiful environment for unique, beautiful portraits! Congratulations Morgan and Carey! May your marriage be like your wedding day…one filled with love and that which gets even more beautiful with time!
